About the Opportunity Job Description: The Research Software
Engineer (Chemical Engineering) will conduct independent research
and software development in the West Lab, focused on the design,
implementation, maintenance, and extension of open-source
scientific software for chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and
reacting-system simulation (e.g., the Cantera MATLAB interface).
Responsibilities include robust software architecture, automated
testing, documentation, release management, and preparation of
peer-reviewed publications describing software capabilities and
scientific impact. The role involves coordination with external
collaborators, funding partners, and open-source community
stakeholders. Mentoring of undergraduate and graduate student
contributors may occur as needed. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in
Chemical Engineering or a closely related field. Deep knowledge of
chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and numerical simulation methods
for reacting systems. Demonstrated expertise in scientific software
development, including object-oriented programming, API/interface
design, automated testing, and software release management.
Proficiency in MATLAB and experience interfacing MATLAB with
compiled languages (e.g., C++). Familiarity with open-source
scientific simulation frameworks (e.g., Cantera) and collaborative
software development workflows including version control, code
review, and continuous integration. Ability to independently
design, implement, document, and release research software, and to
communicate results through peer-reviewed publications. Prior
experience developing and publishing scientific software in a
chemical engineering research context is required. Position Type
