Job Description:
The Senior Instructional Technologist/Designer is responsible
for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of key instructional
technologies on campus including hardware, software, and
faculty/staff training. Duties also include developing and
conducting training for faculty and administration in the following
areas: Blackboard LMS, lecture capture, desktop videoconferencing,
classroom technology and other technologies integrated into the
classroom and curriculum.This position manages the on-campus
Blackboard LMS instance at UMass Lowell, acting as the technical
point of contact for installation and support for all integrations.
The Senior Instructional Technologist/Designer will be expected to
contribute to major projects and to the strategic goals of academic
technology initiatives on campus.Academic Technology and
Instructional Technology Support:The Senior Instructional
Technologist/Designer will be the administrator of UMass Lowell's
key instructional technology suite of tools and will provide
oversight of core system(s), interface with solution providers, and
assist to schedule maintenance and updates.Example of duties
include:
- Respond and monitor faculty support tickets, calls, and
questions. Provide assistance to faculty and students via
telephone, support tickets, virtual, and scheduled
consultations.
- Manage on-campus Blackboard and other associated applications
for UMass Lowell. Includes daily monitoring of systems performance,
scheduling requests and ensuring system reliability.
- Work closely with IT Department staff and external partners to
plan and coordinate system upgrades and maintenance.Technology
Training for Faculty:Working independently, the Senior
Instructional Technologist/Designer will develop and deliver
academic technology workshops and training opportunities for UMass
Lowell faculty and staff.Example of duties include:
- Develop and conduct training and workshops for faculty and
administration that includes Blackboard LMS, lecture capture,
desktop videoconferencing, classroom technology and other
technologies integrated into the classroom.
- Workshops and seminars, plus online tutorials and associated
materials should be developed to support these areas.Academic
Technology Tools:Evaluate, pilot, and recommend academic technology
tools. Provide synergy when working with academic and
administrative departments, libraries, and technology service
providers throughout the university to ensure successful
integration of technologies into the UMass Lowell IT
environment.Example of duties include:
- Analyze potential instructional advantage as well as cost
benefit analysis for academic technology. Contribute expertise to
assist in project design and development for academic
technology.
- Consider how current and future academic technology tools will
integrate with current applications and support
services.Instructional Design Support for Faculty:Working with
little supervision, the Senior Instructional Technologist/Designer
will identify solutions for incorporating academic technology tools
into discipline specific course content.Example of duties include:
- Identify existing resources available on campus
- Assist faculty to expand their teaching methods and gain
confidence in using various technologies (using simulations,
presentations, computer or technology assisted methods)
- Assist faculty to develop content, multimedia, teaching, and
assessment materials.
- Provide training and instruction both one-on-one and small
groups.Staying Current with Emerging Academic Technologies:The
Senior Instructional Technologist/Designer is required to stay
current on trends in academic technology.Example of duties include:
- Present emerging instructional technology tools to the Academic
Technology committee and work with the group to evaluate the
usefulness for the UMass Lowell learning community.
- New technology research & suitability for adoption - Gather
information and determine suitability of current and cutting-edge
tools and equipment utilized in a classroom or virtual
setting.
- The Senior Instructional Technologist/Designer will pursue
continuous professional growth and development in the application
of instructional technology.Other Job Duties:

- Multimedia production/supportMinimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor's Degree required
- Five to seven years of experience supporting instructional
technology or instructional design in an educational
environment
- Minimum of three years' experience with Blackboard or other
Learning Management SystemsPreferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Educational/Instructional Technology/Design
preferredAdditional Considerations:
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and
organizational skills
- Be familiar with instructional design principles and various
instructional delivery modes
- Requires extraordinary customer service skills
- Ability to create and present training sessions for faculty and
staff
- Ability to work closely with faculty to deliver quality
instructional resources across all disciplines
- Able to manage multiple simultaneous projects
- Demonstrated ability to plan, strategize, and deliver
projects
