Job Description:
TURI is hiring an innovative green chemist to help advance its
groundbreaking work to protect human health and the environment.
The person holding this position will have the opportunity to think
creatively, helping advance innovation into safer alternatives to
toxic chemicals and materials. This position will work with key
TURI staff, researchers, businesses and public interest
organizations to identify, develop and implement solutions to
protect workers and communities. These solutions include
opportunities to reduce the use of toxic chemicals as well as
finding safer alternatives to incumbent technologies with intrinsic
hazards. The successful candidate will play an important role as
TURI develops and implements a new strategic plan.The Green Chemist
works to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in products and
manufacturing processes by identifying, developing, and analyzing
safer alternatives to those chemicals, and working with key
partners and stakeholders to advance the adoption of safer
alternatives.Essential Job Duties:
- Research and develop safer alternatives to toxic chemicals by
applying green chemistry principles.
- Design, conduct, and perform laboratory experiments to evaluate
performance of safer alternatives; oversee any students assisting
with testing.
- Analyze lab data and document results. Maintain written and
electronic records about progress of research performed. Summarize
work for case studies and other publications. Assist with
alternatives assessment reports.
- Work with businesses to propose, test, and implement green
chemistry and toxics use reduction solutions.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory health and safety guidelines,
including materials ordering, storage, and use; equipment function
and sterilization; and proper waste disposal.Minimum Qualifications
(Required):
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, including chemistry,
engineering or environmental science
- Strong interest, education and/or work experience in green
chemistry
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the
ability to communicate to both technical and lay audiences
- Proficient at researching new topic areas via internet
searches, literature searches, and outreach to experts via phone/in
person/virtual meetings
- Ability to analyze, categorize, and summarize data from
multiple sources
- Experience in designing and conducting laboratory
experimentsPreferred skills and qualifications:
- Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or other
related field
- Significant experience in green chemistry, research and
development
- Familiarity with alternatives assessment methodologies
including assessing for performance, cost and hazard
- Demonstrable innovativeness
- Familiarity with chemical laws and policies
- Experience working with industrySpecial Instructions to
